I reported Sunday that tr.im had announced it was terminating its URL shortening service which, would have the knock on effect of discontinuing all links shortened with the service starting early 2010.

Nambu, the development firm behind tr.im today announced it will be retracting this decision, making its service available once more, and with the promise that links will NOT become unavailable after 2009.

Unfortunately, its not safe to sleep at night in the URL shortening world just yet.

We have restored tr.im, and re-opened its website. We have been absolutely overwhelmed by the popular response, and the countless public and private appeals I have received to keep tr.im alive.

We have answered those pleas. Nambu will keep tr.im operating going forward, indefinitely, while we continue to consider our options in regards to tr.im’s future.

tr.im’s future isn’t set in stone. The statement above quite clearly states that. But uncertainty about how Nambu will proceed with tr.im aside, the cautions laid fourth in the past week or so about external, URL shortening services still very much apply. In fact, today’s statement just further concretes that.

its clear that tr.im has a large following. These followers are the reason the service has suspended termination at this point. Yet with all that traffic, it still announced Sunday it would close its service.

Next time, the public outcry might not be enough. Take heed of the cautions of URL shortening services.

tr.im – welcome back.
